Mixmag Update July 95
Some people can and some people can't. Locust can. Fat crunchy beats smothered in tight delays and flanges, very slow and very demonic is about the size of things.
'Penetration' is a slow driving dub of distorted beats and echoed vocals, sounding as if it was recorded in an underground tunnel in bulgaria, a beautiful grizzly beat interfused with a repetitive and penetrating vocal drives the atmosphere along, creating a wild fusion of deep hardcore repetition and experimental noise.
'Saturated Love' is another slab of heavyweight distorted funky dub. Kinda Laurie Anderson meets King Tubby. Sound bite vocals trip us along, punctuated by tricky drum programming and added touches of distortion and spin backs. A rather neat package, very stimulating and refreshing to hear beats toyed around in such a manner.
Most wIll find this a tad on the darkside, but for the open-eyed, tired of unoriginal indle-grunge crap then Locust are a light-house be guided by.

Record Mirror 4/9/95
'It's like playing the slipmat' came the promotional recommendation, and just as you're starting to think 'bloody experimental music, what a load of nonsense", the stupid thing turns out to be a brilliant album that is far more listenable and fascinating than a thousand other samey trip hop/chill out/dubby half hearted attempts. Nasty and excruciating one minute and soft and exquisite the next, this collection of good titles (how about 'l Feel Cold Inside Because Of The Things You Say'?) is also a collection of risks worth taking. 5/5

Melody Maker 26th November 1994
This is high-tech Lo-Fi with a dark medievel feeling, where noise and chorals, death and spiritual forces join with elements of hip-hop, techno and classical music. Hints of fast and furious drums underpin various tracks, but it doesn't come on like an attempt to join the junglist fray for a quick kudos injection, more as a curiosity into the boundry smashing energy of the drum and the bass. 'The love you cruelly gave me would not last' has soothing keyboards-light relief in a dark wound. Van Hoen claims he has been experimenting with new music for 13 years, and it shows. It's intense....but he might need to get away for a while.

Radio Bremen 1995 (translated from German)
Truth is born of arguments - a beautiful humanistic motto, The music on "Truth Is Born Of Arguments", however, hits without words - by means of electronic instruments, digitally controlled synthesizers. above all Locust alias Mark Van Hoen is part of the new electrordc music scene. Despite the technicality, his contribution to New Electronica does not evoke coldness. His argument.- "I'm sure that the computer and science fiction associations in electronic music are going to fade by and by. . . I Prefer to go for a walk or to go to the cinema instead of playing on the computer. Computers can be used to control or, at its best, to manipulate sounds which originally do not derive from the computer."
And that's just the London born musician's way of putting it.
Right from the beginning of his current CD. he uses a common practise of studio technics against its proper determination, By means of time stretching, a passage is cut to pieces and fitting in the copies of the Original fragments, usually is transformed into an elegantly sliding segment of twice of more the length.
Mark van Hoen, however, refills the spaces in an untidy and uncompleted manner. This leads to brittle, bumpy, rasping noises - the industrial sound. Even in 1913, the futurist Luigi Russolo in his manifesto 'The Art Of Noises" called for regarding the aesthetic qualities of all acoustic, sources Of the industrial age within a context of artstic values. With his "Orchestra of Noise Instruments" mechanical forerunners of the sythesizer he founded the beginning of machine music.
Locust also does not have his machines operate discreetly:he does not let them go silent about the noise. Like coming into existance of this music. In the second part of the CD, however, the hard beats and noise attacks are gradually dissolved in the flows of repetitive patterns, reaching out for meditative spheres.< Indian music, Jazz, American minimalists Pillip Glass, Steve Reich and La Monte Young - they are reflected in the economic, transparent fabric of Locust's compositions.
The interaction of rhythm and melody, which in classical indian music are moving like a couple in a tantra embracement, inspired him - without naivly adopting ethnological standards.
Drum samples derived from jazz, reversed, distorted, cut and relinked.
Fragmentary vocals, hardly more than just single sounds, hints of opera-like hymns. Statements, after a few syllables breaking off all of a sudden.
Ethereal vibes of non-prosaic abstractions - the only story told on this CD is to be constructed of the track titles; they read like the chapter headlines to a short novel about a sad love affair, In a subtle way, Mark van Hoen sketches his musical imagery, nothing sounds too suggestive, too sonore. The cinema in your head rarely gets concrete. Delicately, he leans towards the real problems in electronic music; the creation of speciflc aesthetics, which are, not corruptable by 'hi tech" cliches and which go far beyond the formalistic decisions in the infinity of bits and bytes: Imagery, thoughts and emotions are not to be prescibed and yet there's more to get from it than just technical signals.
The truth of arguments refers to a film by Andrei Tarkovsky - finally, the viewer's truth is next to it.
